3rd Day: Essaouria & a few scorpions

Updated: Feb 5

There was a lot to see on the way to Essaouria. A little through the mountains and along the coast.

We stopped often to take pictures and turn a few stones.

Tamri / Imsouane

Wolfspider / Wall Gecko

On the mountain of Imsouane, a local woman, probably an old goatherd, surprised me while looking for scorpions. The whole time she stood over me on a hill and watched what I was doing.

When I was about to leave, she came down to me. And unbelievable...when she stood in front of me I was a little shocked, because the old goatherd was a real beauty...a Lady. The chasm had camouflaged them very well. She didn't speak a word of English but kept talking with her shiny white teeth and had something in her hand, a herb or something else.

She wanted to give that to me and have some money. Of course I did that even though I had no use for it. She was just pretty, close to a model, and the clothes covered her. I kept asking myself: Why is such a pretty woman walking around here alone in these clothes? You don't expect that at all. I will never forget that!

And there you can see all the beautiful things happening when you just turn a few stones and spend some time in nature.

Unfortunately I don't have a picture of her but of the scorpions.

We also found a large female of Androctonus mauritanicus here, but she quickly fled into a tree root.

A few kilometers further...

Imsouane Coast / Goats

Wherever argan trees are, there are goats. But only when the fruits are ripe. You could see them all the way.

The goats eat the fruit and digestion makes the excreted "nuts" softer, which benefits argan oil production. They also eat the leaves.

Argantree-Goats

They jump up and down...sometimes one falls off the branch. Definitely impressive.

We drove on for half an hour. Everywhere these great views and scorpions.

Essaouria Beach

A really nice port city. The old town (Medina) of Essaouira was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2001.

At the entrance you could eat well right away.

Medina

Shopping Alleys

The doors are just great!

And there was this fish market. We hardly dared to go there, it was wet everywhere and sometimes slippery. Nobody wanted to fall on the fish bottom...it also smelled very strongly of fish.

Here you could walk through every day or swim on the beach. We made our way back...

Route Essaouria N1

A little detour somewhere along the way.
